Mireia Fernández-Ardèvol is a full professor in digital communication at the Open University of Catalonia and an Acadèmia Excel·lència professor (AGAUR, 2026–2031). Her research examines digital communication as a lens to understand social peripheries, focusing on groups that remain at the margins of highly digitalised societies due to limited resources, access, or representation. In this context, socio-digital inequalities are a central focus of her work.
She also critically explores processes of hyper-datafication and the use of digital methodologies, reflecting on the potential and limitations of quantitative approaches and on the forms of exclusion these methods may generate, reproduce, or help to overcome. A specific line of inquiry addresses ageism, including its digital and data-driven expressions.
Mireia chairs the temporary working group on Aging and Communication Studies within ECREA (European Communication Research and Education Association). She is committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and to contributing research that informs socially relevant policies.
